Apply for a job as a flight attendant at Atlantic Southeast Airlines and you’ll likely be interviewed by Kelly Schnorr and Dessi Kapitanova, two of our flight attendants who double as recruiters when they’re not out flying the friendly skies.
Since the beginning of 2010, Dessi and Kelly have spent their days at our Atlanta headquarters reviewing applications and interviewing candidates to become the newest class of Atlantic Southeast flight attendants.
“The number of applicants was really astonishing,” Kelly said. “We had about 5,000 people of all ages, backgrounds and levels of experience vying for 200 open positions.”
Our 2010 flight attendant hiring marks the first time that front-line flight attendants have been tasked with selecting their future coworkers, and according to Dessi and Kelly, the initiative has been a huge success.
“The interview process involved group and individual sessions, all led by front-line flight attendants, that really gave us a chance to get to know the candidates, while drawing on our own on-the-job experiences, to hire who we thought would be the best fit for the job,” Dessi said.
“It was definitely selective,” Kelly added. “We took a lot of care in selecting people who we knew would carry out the Atlantic Southeast vision and take pride in treating our passengers with the level care they’ve come to expect.”
According to Dessi and Kelly, they interviewed at least a couple thousand people during a four-month period, and had everyone from former flight attendants and others with airline experience, to nurses, real estate agents and lawyers looking for second careers.
“The best part of this experience has been seeing these new faces out at the airport after they complete training, and knowing that we’ve been empowered to make a difference in our company,” Kelly said.
